Obituary

Betty Jean McGowen, 87, died Thursday, July 6, 2023, at her home in Clyde.  Funeral services will be held at 2:30 p.m. Sunday, July 9, 2023, at the Clyde Church of Christ with David Peterson officiating under the direction of Bailey-Howard Funeral Home. Burial will follow in the Clyde Cemetery. Visitation will be from 4:00 to 6:00 p.m. on Saturday at the funeral home.

Betty was born on April 2, 1936, in Clyde, to Walter and Edna (Rogers) Waggoner. She grew up in Clyde, where she and her brother were raised after the loss of their mother, by her grandparents, James Earl and Rose Etta Waggoner along with her six uncles.  She was a graduate of Clyde High School and lived all of her life on a farm north of Clyde.  Betty was the widow of Cary Sidney "Hoot" McGowen whom she married on April 10, 1972, in Hamlin. She was a hard worker and provided well for her seven children. Betty worked in nursing for most of her life. She worked at the Baird Hospital for more than 20 years, Concepts of Care for 13 years, and also West Texas Medical Center. She loved bowling, sewing and farm life and loved baking and cooking, making the best homemade meals for her loved ones. She was a devoted member of the Clyde Church of Christ, where she attended all her life.

Betty is survived by one son, James Miller and wife Terry of Hawley; three daughters, Jeanita Miller of Clyde, Denise Miller of Clyde and Renea Hedden and husband Jody of Clyde; one daughter-in-law, Ashley McGowen of Clyde; one son-in-law, Richard Swan of Clyde; one brother, Cecil Waggoner and wife Clara of Jacksonville, North Carolina; 14 grandchildren; 27 great-grandchildren; two nieces; two nephews and their children.

Betty was preceded in death by her parents, Walter and Edna Waggoner; her husband, Hoot McGowen; two sons, Larry Wayne Miller and Rick McGowen; one daughter, Lori Swan; one brother, Larry Wayne Waggoner and her great granddaughter, Josiegh Savell.
