Chalmus Arthur Burgess, 94, of Clyde, died Friday, March 21, 2025, at the Clyde Nursing Home. A memorial service is scheduled for 1:00pm Saturday, March 22, 2025, at the pavilion in the Clyde City Park.
Chal was born on December 19, 1930, in Dundee, Texas to Ben and Carrie Burgess. He attended school at Harrold, Texas and met and married Doris Boxley from Frederick, Oklahoma in 1950. Chal enlisted in the U.S. Army and was deployed to Korea in 1951 where he earned a Bronze Star while serving with the 235th Field Artillery Observation Battalion of Fort Sill, Oklahoma.
Chal attended Abilene Christian College and he and Doris moved to Toledo, Oregon in 1956 where he served as a minister and song leader. They moved to Clyde, Texas in 1957 where they raised their three sons. Chal worked and retired from the U.S. Postal service in Abilene, Texas. They attended the Clyde Church of Christ where Chal served as a Deacon and an Elder.
Chal became an integral part of the World Bible School in the 70's, creating his own organization, Nickles For Bibles, which supplied Bibles to third-world countries. Chal and Doris retired to Cherokee Village, Arkansas in the 80's where they both became certified Master Gardeners. They moved back to Clyde in the 90's where they lived a wonderful life with friends and family.
Chal is preceded in death by his wife, Doris, and his grandson, U.S. Army Staff Sgt. Bryan Burgess.
He is survived by his three sons Dennis Mark of Clyde, Terry Allan of Fort Worth, and Richard Lynn of Lewisville; a sister, Bennie Carolyn of Bedford, Texas; his granddaughter Brandi Starr Burgess of Cleburne, and his great-grandchildren, Makya Renee and Zander Allan of Oceanside, California.
