Darrell Gene Wright, 89, of Baird passed away Thursday, July 16, 2026, at his home. Funeral services will be held at 2:00 p.m. Monday, July 20, 2026, at Clyde First Baptist Church with Dr. Jay Miller officiating. Burial will follow in Elmwood Memorial Park in Abilene. Visitation will be from 3:00 until 5:00 p.m. Sunday at Bailey Howard Funeral Home of Clyde.
Darrell was born July 13, 1937, in Cleburne to Vernie Ishmael and Royal Inez (Tutt) Wright. He married Gale Martin in Clyde on January 7, 1985. Darrell worked for Merchants Fast Motor Lines for 35 years and attended the First Baptist Churches in Clyde and Baird. In his younger years, Darrell played semi-pro baseball in Lubbock and later coached in the pony league in Lubbock. He then coached the senior league and the pony league in Baird and men’s slow pitch softball in Abilene, winning four state championships. He also loved hunting and fishing and was considered a “Master Gardner” by his friends and family and will be missed by them all.
He is survived by his wife of 41 years, Gale Wright of Baird; three sons, Darrell Zane Wright of Baird, Richard Codie Parkhill of Baird and Billy Roy Parkhill and wife Charissa of Boerne; two daughters, Deborah Kay Wolfe and husband Kevin Vernon of Cedar Hill and Daina Deneine Moore of Lueders; two brothers, Larry Dwayne Wright and wife Linda of Springtown and Danny Paul Wright of Keller; brother-in-law, Roy Dixon of Mansfield; ten grandchildren, Lori Wolfe, Bethany Richards and husband Scott, Jason Moore and wife Karolina, Kristen Miller and husband Roger, Riley Moore and fiancé Hayleigh. Hudson Parkhill, Jaxson Parkhill, Ethan Parkhill, Ely Parkhill and Aidan Widby; eleven great grandchildren and numerous other relatives and friends.
Darrell was preceded in death by his parents; two sisters, Kay Dixon and Glenda Martin; brother, David Wright; son-in-law, Rocky Moore and grandson, Cory Zane Wright.
