David Grayson Miller, 82, of Clyde passed away Friday, August 16, 2024, in a Baird Care Center. Funeral services will be held at 10:00 a.m. Wednesday, August 21, 2024, at Clyde Methodist Church under the direction of Bailey Howard Funeral Home of Clyde. Burial will follow with military honors in the Admiral Cemetery. Visitation will be from 5:00 p.m. until 6:30 p.m. Tuesday at the funeral home.
David was born January 26, 1942, in Baird at Callahan County Hospital to Ernest Grayson and Jerraine Smedley Miller. He attended Eula Schools and served in the U.S. Navy from 1960 until 1964 where he reached the rank of E5 and was an aircraft electrician and a member of the Air Rescue Team. David continued to serve his country as a Naval Reservist from 1964 to 1966. He married the love of his life, Melba Shelton, in Baird on August 21, 1964 the ceremony was performed by Methodist Pastor Homer Salley at the home of Melba's aunt, Elva Purvis Smith Morris; and, then they made their home in Clyde, Texas by way of Abilene, Texas and Camden, Arkansas. They arrived in Clyde on January 19, 1970, with six week old Mendy.
Prior to owning and operating Longacre's Gun and Lock Shop for 27 years, David was a fireman, a crop duster and a commercial pilot for several oil companies. After retiring from Longacre's, David served as a city judge for the City of Clyde and as the evidence curator for Callahan County Sheriff's Department until the time of his death. He was a lifelong resident of Callahan County and an active member of Clyde Methodist Church.
He is survived by his wife of 60 years, Melba Shelton Miller of Clyde; daughter, Mendy Drucilla Miller Lee and husband Tommy of Clyde; three grandchildren, Drucilla Cayenne Meier Hays and husband Chad of Aspermont, William Wesley Meier and wife Shelby of Clyde and Jesse Grayson Meier of Clyde; three great grandchildren, Prairie Drucilla Hays, Brazos Allen Hays and Madelyn Jean Meier; grandchildren's father, Kevin Meier and wife Kim of Eula; three nephews, Grayson Paul Miller of Abilene, Kelly Lee Miller of Baird and Robert Milton Patterson of Austin; and two nieces, Carla Sue Shelton Bragg of Comanche and Mitzi LaNell Shelton Riggins of Olney. Finally, David is survived by his cousin and namesake David Eugene Smedley of Aledo.
David was preceded in death by his parents and three brothers, Cosby, Richard (Ricky) and Paul Miller.
