Gene Thomas Prew, 83, of Abilene passed away Tuesday, August 1, 2023, at Hendrick Hospice Center in Abilene. Funeral mass will be held at 10:00 a.m. Saturday, August 5, 2023, at Sts. Joachim and Ann Catholic Church of Clyde with Rev. Albert Ezeanya officiating under the direction of Bailey Howard Funeral Home. Burial will follow in the Clyde Catholic Cemetery. Visitation will be from 5:00 until 6:30 p.m. Friday, with a rosary at 6:30 p.m. at Bailey Howard Funeral Home, 105 Oak St., Clyde.
Gene was born November 15, 1939, in Abilene to Raymond and Thelma (Donnelly) Prew. He graduated from St. Joseph Academy. Gene married Sue Perry on March 30, 1963. He worked for Taylor County for many years, retiring in March 2002 as maintainer operator. He lived in the Abilene and Eula area. He was a member of Holy Family Catholic Church. Gene loved farming, gardening and his tractor. He enjoyed all animals, especially the donkeys, goats and dogs that he raised and cared for over the years.
He is survived by his wife of 60 years, Sue Prew of Abilene; four sons, Raymond Prew and wife Cindy of Austin, Wade Prew of Elgin, Doug Prew and wife Kelly of Lexington and Michael Prew of Bastrop; daughter, Debbie Pentecost and husband Coy of Abilene; brother, Donald Prew of Buffalo Gap; his sister, Sissy Miller and husband Donald of Clyde; sister-in-law, Melinda Prew of Eula; brother-in-law, Shelbern Perry of Midland; seven grandchildren, Jarren Prew, Morgan Meyers and husband Trevor, Mandie Fritsche and husband Andrew, Kassie Prew, Stephanie Prew, Joshua Prew and Daniel Moore and wife Ashley; ten great grandchildren, Ryan, Hadley, Cami, Audrey, Casen, Paisley, Kaden, Emma, Charlotte and Carter Knox and many nieces, nephews and friends.
Gene was preceded in death by his parents; three brothers, Pat, James and Robert Prew; grandson, Cody Pentecost and three sisters-in-law, Colleen, Brenda and Melba Prew.
