Obituary

Joyce Mae Fleming, 95, passed away peacefully on Friday, June 5, 2026 at Library of Legacies Assisted Living in Slaton, Texas. Funeral services will be held on Monday, June 29th at 10:30am at Clyde Methodist Church with James Martin officiating under the direction of Bailey Howard Funeral Home. Burial will follow in Clyde Cemetery. Visitation will be Sunday, June 28th from 3:00 to 4:00  pm at the funeral home.

Joyce was born on December 6, 1930, in Carbon, Texas to H.L. “Ramsey” and Gracie (Rhyne) Harris, where she was raised on a farm alongside her ten siblings in Scranton. She grew up with the values of hard work and family at the very center of her life — values she carried with her always. On November 2, 1948,she married the love of her life, Alton Willie Fleming, and together they settled in Clyde, Texas, where they built a home and raised their three children.

Joyce’s life’s work was her family. She was a prolific seamstress who ensured her loved ones were never without a warm quilt or hand-crochet afghan — a gift she gave nearly every Christmas. She maintained a thriving garden for decades, long after the family no longer depended on it for their food, because tending to it was simply a part of who she was. She sewed her family’s clothes, organized cherished family experiences, and devoted herself entirely to the people she loved. Her independence and tireless work ethic were hallmarks of her character, and she exemplified selfless devotion throughout the fifteen years she lovingly cared for her husband, Alton, during his illness.

Joyce was a faithful member of First United Methodist Church of Clyde, where her faith grounded and guided her throughout her long life. The family would like to express their appreciation to the staff and residents at Slaton Library of Legacies for all the wonderful care and compassion.

Joyce is survived by her daughter, Lisa (Bill) Carmony of Slaton; daughters-in-law Karen Fleming and Margaret Fleming; grandchildren Amanda (Dustin) Fenimore, Sarah (Ethan) Fortenberry, Clint (Lauren) Fleming, and KaraLyn (Jared) West; and eight beloved great-grandchildren.

Joyce was preceded in death by her husband, Alton and their sons, Danny and Jackie Fleming.
