Lewis E.J. (Sonnyboy) Matthews, 92, of Clyde died Tuesday, November 16, 2021 in an Abilene hospital. A memorial service will be held at 1:30 p.m. Saturday, November 27, 2021 at the Fountaingate Fellowship Church, 210 Paisano Dr. in Clyde with Jackie Wallace officiating. Inurnment will be at a later date at the Texas State Veterans Cemetery at Abilene.

Lewis was born September 18, 1929 in Abilene to Othel and Annie (Tucker) Matthews. He graduated from Wylie High School in 1948 and married Lorita Fay Loving in Abilene on July 25, 1948, celebrating their 73 ^rd anniversary this year. He joined the Texas National Guard May 3, 1948. He was part of the 131 Field Art, 36 ^th Infantry Division and 111 Engineering Battalion, 49 ^th Armored Division. He retired, after 29 years of service, on January 26, 1977 as Lieutenant Colonel. Lewis went to work for Southwestern Bell in June of 1948 at the age of 19, retiring after 36 years at the age of 55. Lewis and Lorita loved traveling and were members of the Silver Streak Travel Club for many years and also members of Northwest Church of Christ.

He is survived by his wife, Lorita Fay Matthews of Clyde; two sons, Christopher Lewis of Alvarado and Richard Don and wife Debbie of Burleson; one daughter, Brenda Fay Comer and husband Terry of Clyde; seven grandchildren, Dene Matthews and wife Angel, Laura Matthews, Paul Matthews. Tyler Matthews and wife Angie, Evan Matthews, Terry "Boogie" Comer and wife Leslie and Natalie Nickerson and husband Steven; ten great grandchildren, Aidan, Ella, Dalton, Ethan, Ty, Jordan and wife Rylee, Caleb, Tristan, Melody and Granger "Buck" and several nieces and nephews.

Lewis was preceded in death by his parents; three sisters, Alma Lee Adams, Annie Mae Bennett and Clara Joyce Neeley.
