Obituary

Mark Dennis Walker, 76, of Cross Plains, passed away on Tuesday, July 11, 2023, in Comanche, Texas.  Funeral services will be held at 10:00 a.m. Saturday, July 15, 2023, at First Baptist Church in Cross Plains with Pastor Terry Simmons officiating under the direction of Bailey Howard Funeral Home of Clyde. Burial will follow in Long Branch Cemetery. Visitation will be 5:30 until 7:30 p.m. Friday at the First Baptist Church Gym.

Mark was born February 4, 1947, in Abilene to Vernon Douglas and Thora Mae Walker. Mark grew up in Rising Star, Texas. Upon graduation from Rising Star High School, he served two years in the U.S. Army, stationed in Alaska. He later returned to the Rising Star / Cross Plains area and began his lifelong trade as a welder. He married Sharolyn Barnett of Burkett. Mark and Sharolyn had two daughters, Sharon Bea and Shirley Suzanne. Mark was an accomplished welder who would take on the most difficult jobs. He also had an artistic ability to create most anything from metal. Mark blessed many family and friends with the various metal items he created over the years.

Mark loved the Lord. He was very generous and was known for always helping others, even above his own needs. He was a unique character and an entertaining storyteller. Mark attended Triple Cross Cowboy Church in Cross Plains and served as an officer with the local American Legion.

Mark was extremely proud of his family. He was preceded in death by his parents and infant sister, Patti Joann. He is survived by his daughters, Sharon Harris and husband Troy of Stephenville and Shirley Dickerson and husband Chad of Campbell; five grandchildren, Whitney Maguire and Matt of Ore City, Hannah Nation and Jacob of Stephenville, Bracken Grant and Kaitlyn of Duffeau, Walker Grant and Sydney of Hamilton and Lainey Turner and Mark of Fort Drum, New York; great grandsons, Oakley Grant, Case Nation, Thatcher Maguire and Stratton Grant. This legacy was a source of pride and joy during his difficult battle.

Mark is also survived by his dear siblings who always looked out for "Micky" throughout his life. Sister, Martha Jones and Leon of Abilene; brother, Douglas Walker and Carolyn of Rising Star; nephew, Darren Jones; nieces, Cindy Franklin, Vickie Vaughn, Pam Shearer, Becky Walker, Pam Smith and Sheryl Pope and their spouses and grandchildren as well as a host of dear friends.
