Shirley June Gilmore was born on September 29, 1948, in Cross Plains, Texas, to Newton Hugh Kinnard and Louise May Bass Kinnard. She was raised in Abilene, Texas, where she attended Abilene High School.
On October 9, 1976, she married the love of her life, Felton Gilmore, and the two made their home in Baird, Texas, before moving to Clyde, Texas, in 1998.
In her younger years, Shirley had an adventurous spirit and loved riding motorcycles and racing cars. Throughout her life, she also had a passion for painting, embroidering, shopping, and listening to country music — especially George Strait. She found joy in expressing her creativity through her artwork and treasured life’s simple pleasures. Above all else, she cherished her family, close friends, and every moment she was able to spend with them.
She was a devoted wife, mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, and friend. Shirley was known for her incredible strength, unwavering devotion to her family, and her fun-loving personality. Anyone who knew her knew she was as spicy and feisty as they come — never afraid to speak her mind and always able to bring laughter, warmth, and unforgettable memories to those around her.
Shirley is survived by her children, Felton Gilmore Jr. and wife, Mary-Anne Gilmore; Sherry Ashcraft and husband, Travis Ashcraft; Cathy Dickerson and husband, Bob Dickerson; Charlotte Halvorson and husband, Scott Halvorson; and Sheri Renee Miller and husband, Mathew Miller. She also leaves behind 18 beloved grandchildren, numerous great-grandchildren, and many other family members and dear friends who will forever cherish her memory.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Newton Hugh Kinnard and Louise May Bass Kinnard; her sister, Gloria Carrigan; her brothers, Newton Kinnard and Don Kinnard; her beloved husband, Felton Gilmore; and a cherished granddaughter, Kara Miller.
Shirley’s legacy of love, strength, humor, and resilience will live on in the hearts of all who knew and loved her. Though she will be deeply missed, her spirit will continue to shine through the stories, laughter, and memories shared by her family for generations to come.
