MAY 19, 1937 – FEBRUARY 6, 2021
Retired Master Sargent Thomas C. Sommerville passed peacefully from this life the morning of February 6, 2021 after a gradual decline in health. He was surrounded and supported by his loving family and caregivers during the last days of his life. Tom was born May 19, 1937 in rural Harrison County West Virginia to Glenn & Mary Ellen Sommerville. After graduating from High School in 1955 he enlisted in the United States Air Force and served his country for over 22 years of active service. Tom loved his country and will forever be remembered for his unwavering patriotism.
Tom married the love of his life Jo Eddie Nitzschke on June 1, 1958 in Waco, Texas and from this union three children were born, son Richard Sommerville of Mt. Juliet, TN., daughter Terry Hayhurst and spouse Randy Davis of Clyde, TX, and daughter Tracy Hayes and spouse Mike of Rangely, CO. In addition to his three surviving children, he leaves behind six grandchildren Travis, Monica & Trent Sommerville, Skyler Hayhurst, Shelby Hayes & Hillary Hayes Deets, Seth, Judah, Jon-Michael Davis & Rachel Davis Wason, as well as many great grandchildren, nieces and nephews, a brother Gordon Sommerville of Good Hope, West Virginia and sister Sue Crown of Florida.
Tom was preceded in death by his loving wife and companion of 50 years "Josie", his parents, and many loved brother-in laws and sister-in laws.
A memorial service with full military honors will be held Friday, May 28, 2021 at 11:00 a.m. at the Texas State Veterans Cemetery, 7457 W. Lake Road, Abilene Texas. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made in Tom's name to the Texas State Veterans Cemetery in Abilene, 7457 W. Lake Road, Abilene, Texas, 79601 or Hendrick Hospice Care Center, 1651 Pine Street, Abilene, Texas, 79601.
